Our journey began in 1836 when, following Napoleon Bonaparte’s defeat by the British at Trafalgar, he got the hump and blockaded the British import of sugar cane to the continent. With sugar off the menu, the sweet-toothed Belgians went in for some DIY, set up their own beet sugar industry and our forebears – Raffinerie Tirlemontoise – set up our first refinery in Antwerp.
